Enlgarged Prostate - Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)

Prostate enlargement, medically known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a common male condition caused by various factors such as aging, decreased male hormones, genetics, and lifestyle habits. It causes the prostate gland to enlarge, which can lead to urinary tract obstruction, discomfort, pain, and indirectly affect sexual function in men. The prostate gland is usually the size of a walnut, but can grow to the size of an orange or larger. When the prostate enlarges, it can put pressure on the urethra, the tube that carries urine, resulting in a weak urine stream, frequent urination, and the need to strain while urinating. In severe cases, urinary retention may occur, where the bladder is unable to empty, potentially leading to kidney problems if left untreated.

Symptoms of BPH

  • Urinary retention
  • Weak and thin stream of urine
  • Frequent urination, especially at night (nocturia).
  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder
  • Difficulty urinating.

Causes of BPH

Enlarged prostate is a common condition, especially in older men, with growth typically beginning in their 30s and continuing until about age 70. The exact cause of BPH is not fully understood. However, male hormones are known to play a role in its development, and other factors, such as a Western diet and genetic predisposition, are thought to contribute.
